With a pep band set to debut in Fall 2026, Rockhurst Athletics hopes to enhance the gameday experience while creating new opportunities for student involvement.
The pep band will perform at basketball, volleyball, and select athletic events, helping bring more energy and excitement to campus. As Rockhurst athletics continues to grow, the band is expected to play a key role in building a stronger fan atmosphere.
“This is an opportunity to enhance our gameday environment and bring more excitement to college athletics,” said Athletic Director Kristy Bayer. “We also want to give students a chance to continue their passion for music while being part of something bigger on campus.”
The program will be open to both current and incoming students, with scholarships available for participants. This makes the pep band not only a spirit-driven initiative, but also a valuable opportunity for students looking to stay involved in music during college.
A major step forward for the program came with the hiring of John Wilson as pep band director. Wilson brings nearly 40 years of experience in music education, including roles at Benedictine College, Southwest Baptist University, and several Missouri school districts. His leadership will help guide the development of the band as it prepares for its first season.
“I’m excited and honored to serve as the new director of the Rockhurst Pep Band,” Wilson said. “I look forward to being part of the gameday experience and building something special for students.”
The addition of the pep band comes at a time of strong momentum for Rockhurst athletics. The men’s basketball team recently captured its first Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season title, while programs like baseball, lacrosse, tennis, and swimming continue to see success.
Beyond athletics, the pep band represents a larger effort to strengthen campus culture. By creating new traditions and opportunities for involvement, Rockhurst is continuing to invest in the overall student experience.
