In recent months, anyone walking around campus may notice that a familiar, friendly face is missing. As of Dec. 23, 2025, Fr. Hess concluded his service at Rockhurst University to return to his home province on the West Coast with the Jesuits USA West Province. Rockhurst University is a member of the Central and Southern Province.
Since joining the university in 2022, Fr. Hess has played a pivotal role in campus life, presiding over liturgies and advancing the Jesuit mission at Rockhurst. As vice president for mission and ministry, Fr. Hess left a major impact on campus, helping design and create the new Alvin Brooks Center for Faith and serving as chairman for the Mission Priority Examen. In both roles, Fr. Hess helped lead the university, ensuring it continued to remain true to the Jesuit mission of living in service to the church and the world.
In the wake of his departure, Dr. Matthew Quick has stepped into his position as interim vice president for mission and ministry while also holding the positions of vice president for student development and athletics, dean of students and member of the president’s Cabinet.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sandra Cassady has been actively consulting with a wide range of leaders both within and beyond the Rockhurst community to discern the best path forward, Quick said. In her search, Cassady will consult staff, faculty and students. The search will be nationwide and intentional.
Moreover, according to Quick, “While the search will include very active outreach to the Jesuit priest network, there is a recognition that the very best fit for this position at Rockhurst University at this time in our history could be a lay person. In fact, 12 of the 27 U.S. Jesuit colleges and universities have a lay person as their chief mission officer.”
While Fr. Hess’ joyful presence is certainly missed, other Jesuits remain at the Claver Jesuit Residence just off the north side of campus, serving the communities of Rockhurst University, Rockhurst High School and St. Francis Xavier Parish just across Troost. They include Fr. Bill Oulvey, Fr. Mike Sheeran and Fr. Derrick Weingartner. Fr. Oulvey works as a student success coach, Fr. Sheeran is a special assistant to mission and ministry, and Fr. Weingartner serves as the superior for all of the Kansas City Jesuit community. All three continue to say Mass in the new Mabee Chapel and have provided significant contributions to the university regarding sacramental offerings and special events such as the upcoming “white coat” ceremony for physical therapy students.
