A Taste of Tú Taco

Tú Taco Nachos.

Although the Rockhurst community loved Rock E. Hawk’s Soups and Sammies, it is time to pay our respects and welcome in the newest Student Choice eatery. Now, where the beloved sandwich shop once lay in the Rock Room in Massman Hall, stands Tú Taco, a Mexican-style restaurant voted on by the student body.

The restaurant is making a grand return, as it was a dining option for Rockhurst students in 2019, but this time with new options for customers to try. As a hawk who is passionate about both eating and utilizing my meal plan, I feel qualified to help guide you through the new Tú Taco menu and have shared my thoughts about a few of the most popular eats.

1.Nachos Ground Beef

The first menu item I found myself drawn to was the Nachos Ground Beef meal. I personally chose the beef nachos, but there are chicken, pulled pork and veggie options available as well. Beyond just the meat, there are wide variety of fresh ingredients to put on your nachos, possibly even more than Chipotle, such as lettuce, mashed pinto beans, queso and tomatoes among others. These nachos could simply be described as “loaded,” as the friendly employees will never sell you short on ingredients. The chips are sturdy and do not get soggy in the mass of ingredients. Not to mention that they come in a multitude of colors: yellow, red and even green. My only complaint is the chips could be slightly more salted, which would bring these nachos to the pinnacle of perfection. The size of the meal is pretty hefty and could be shared with a friend, but no shame if you choose to keep them all to yourself. Coming from an expert, I would overall rate these nachos a solid 8.5/10.

2. Seasoned Ground Beef Burrito

The next item menu at hand is the Seasoned Ground Beef Burrito. Essentially, it is the nachos inside of a tortilla, so I cannot complain there. Like the nachos, this too has various meat and no-meat options to choose from. It is a good size and will keep you full throughout a tough day of classes, or until you need your next Tú Taco meal at least. However, one time a Tú Taco staff member asked me if I wanted the small or large burrito, and I made the mistake of getting the small one. My recommendation is to ensure you get the right size based on your level of hunger. The tortilla did an excellent job of being rigid enough to hold all the ingredients in, but still remaining soft and warm to the taste. I will say that the pico is quite spicy, but that did not stop me from enjoying every bite. Overall, this was a respectable burrito that I would definitely eat again. It earns a high rating of 9/10, even higher than the nachos.

2. Taco Salad Pollo

The third menu item, the Taco Salad Pollo, seemed to be a hot commodity with the Tú Taco fans, so I had to give it a try myself. The taco salad comes in a bowl made out of a fried tortilla, which you then fill with your favorite ingredients. I decided to try the chicken option this time and it most certainly did not disappoint. In fact, the only problem with this bowl is that it was almost too good. I kept finding myself eating the tortilla bowl, causing the ingredients to spill out. This was definitely a personal problem, but I am going to have to dock off points, nonetheless. With that being said, this was a solid dish earning a high rating of 8/10.

As you can tell from my reviews, all these dishes are chef’s kisses. While the Seasoned Ground Beef Burrito took the win for highest rating, I have not been unsatisfied with any of the meals I have tried at Tú Taco. A few other honorable mentions would be the classic Quesadilla and the side of Chips and Queso. If you have not tried Tú Taco yet, I recommend you get over there as soon as possible to meet the friendly staff and get yourself a good, hearty meal.
