The Rockhurst Women’s Basketball team kicked off their season with two wins. The first home game was on November 9 at the Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse against Adams State University. For the first time ever, the two teams battled it out in a double overtime – with the Hawks taking the win.

Tipoff began at 5:30 p.m. but, as time passed, the crowd increasingly grew as Rockhurst students arrived to show their school spirit. The Spirit Squad, composed of Rockhurst’s cheer team and the Rockhurst Rockettes dance team, also made their first appearance of the year. They performed a Latin-mix routine featuring songs by Pitbull and JLO.

As the 4th quarter began, the basketball teams were neck-in-neck, with only a 1-point differential. Tension rose in the crowd as the last 2 minutes came to an end and the scores were tied.

The teams then proceeded into a 5-minute overtime. Unlike in football, women’s basketball played the entire 5 minutes. The Hawks had a 3-point lead at the beginning of overtime, but Adams State soon followed suit and tied the score again, leading into that first-time double overtime.

Luckily, the Hawks pulled ahead and took the first win of the season with a final score of 82-79.

The Rockhurst crowd was invited back for the following game on November 10 against the University of St. Mary. Rockhurst’s women’s team dominated the court, with a final score of 96-56.

Upcoming games and notable opponents are listed in the 2018-19 women’s basketball schedule and include:

November 29 at 5 p.m. against Truman State University (away)

December 1: Quincy University (away)

December 10: University of Central Missouri (home)

December 15: Rogers State University (away)
