Rockhurst comes up short in upset bids at Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Both the Rockhurst men’s and women’s basketball teams traveled to Louisville, Ky. Thursday with plans to come away with upsets against the Bellarmine University Knights. Although they both able to keep their respective games close Thursday, they were unable to come away with the impressive road win.
Women: Bellarmine, 81 – Rockhurst, 75
The Hawks (8-3, 3-1 GLVC) finished the first quarter with a 16-14 lead, but No. 4 Bellarmine was able to take a seven-point lead into halftime. The largest lead for the Knights (11-1, 3-0 GLVC) was 14 with 5:56 remaining in the fourth quarter before the Hawks were able to close the gap to six points by game’s end.
Mary Dineen led the Hawks with 27 points, and Marisa Lowe complemented Dineen with 12 points of her own. Rockhurst shot 68 percent from the free-throw line.
Bellarmine forced 23 turnovers, while only committing 13 of their own. The Knights also had the advantage in the paint, outscoring Rockhurst 42-26.
The Knights had five players score in double figures. Raven Merriweather was one of three Knights to score 14 points for Bellarmine. Merriweather added an assist and three steals.
The Hawks have another tough road test when they take on Southern Indiana (11-2, 3-0 GLVC) on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Men: Bellarmine, 80 – Rockhurst, 71
Junior forward Kaleb Warner led the way for the Hawks (7-5, 1-3 GLVC) with 21 points in a loss against No. 13 Bellarmine. Rockhurst shot just 50 percent from the free-throw line (13-26) Thursday night.
In his first game back from injury, forward Alex Hagan posted 9 points and an assist in 26 minutes of play. Guard Travis House, who is normally lethal from behind the arc, was 2-8 from the three-point line.
The Knights (11-2, 3-0 GLVC) outscored the Hawks on second-chance points 15-7. Rockhurst added 20 points off the bench.
The Hawks travel to No. 17 Southern Indiana (13-0, 3-0 GLVC) Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3:15 p.m.
