Busy Weekend Awaits Rockhurst Athletics
November 4, 2016
Four different Rockhurst sports teams are set to travel this weekend to compete in game action. Here’s a preview of what each team faces.
(Note): All GLVC matchups (men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball) can be streamed online on the GLVC Sports Network.
Men’s Soccer
Rockhurst (15-2-1) heads east to the University of Indianapolis to take part in the Great Lakes Valley Conference postseason tournament. The Hawks face the Quincy Hawks (12-4-2) Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the University of Indianapolis. Rockhurst defeated Quincy 1-0 earlier this season.
Currently ranked No. 6 in the latest NSCAA Coaches poll, Rockhurst defeated Maryville University 3-0 last Sunday at home in the first round of the GLVC tournament behind two goals from Gianluca Bottoni and one by Kaleb Jackson.
If Rockhurst comes away victorious Friday, the GLVC championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Indianapolis. Rockhurst would face the winner of Indianapolis and Southern Indiana.
Women’s Soccer
The Rockhurst women’s soccer team finds themselves in a similar situation as the men. After also winning the team’s first game in the GLVC conference tournament last Sunday, the Hawks (16-1-2) await the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tritons (12-3-1) Friday in Indianapolis at 11 a.m.
In a close matchup earlier this season, the Hawks beat the Tritons 1-0 at UMSL. The Hawks’ lone goal was scored by Kaley Neiters.
The women’s GLVC championship game is scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m. in Indianapolis. The winner of the Hawks and Tritons matchup will face either McKendree or Truman St.
Women’s Volleyball
Currently 21-5 and sitting in first place in the GLVC West division, the Rockhurst volleyball team travels east to the state of Indiana this weekend for two matches.
The first test for the Hawks will be Friday night at St. Joseph’s College (6-9) at 7 p.m. Rockhurst will then take on the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds (12-13) Saturday at 3 p.m.
Men’s Basketball
The Rockhurst men’s basketball team heads north this weekend for two tough exhibition tests against Division I programs. The Hawks will tip off with the DePaul Blue Demons in Chicago, Illinois at 8 p.m. Friday night.
Saturday’s test should be a tougher one for the Hawks. Led by second-year coach Drew Diener, Rockhurst faces Marquette University at 3 p.m.
Both Marquette and DePaul are members of the Big East conference.
