In the mood for Mexican? KC’s Southwest Boulevard offers authentic options

Katrina Bergman, Staff Writer

An entire two blocks in the heart of Kansas City, Mo., is flourishing with authentic Hispanic culture.

Southwest Boulevard is lined with restaurants, bakeries and convenience stores that showcase a small piece of Hispanic culture in Kansas City. Positioned just minutes south from downtown — and just 15 minutes and roughly four miles from Rockhurst — this area often goes unnoticed by locals. But those who do not only miss its authenticity, but also its amazing food, often at low, college-friendly prices.

If you do make your way down to the Boulevard, here’s a few recommendations:

  • Who doesn’t love late-night Mexican food? Rather than sitting idle in a drive-thru, check out El Pueblito Open until midnight on weeknights and 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday (that’s right — 4 a.m.), they offer dishes that include traditional salsas and tamales. In fact, El Pueblito has won several awards for their atmosphere and great tasting Patron margaritas.
  • Taco Tuesday. Must I say more? Rico’s Tacos Lupe is a crowd favorite on this unofficial weekly holiday. That several combinations come in at just $1 is only one reason to try it out. Authenticity is at the heart of it all. Their meat options, which include barbacoa, carne asada and chicken, paired with homemade salsa, fresh cilantro and white onions served on corn tortillas are mouthwatering and delicious.
  • Walking further down the boulevard, you will immediately notice a sweet and powerful scent coming from Panaderia de las Americas. Cookies, pastries and breads fill the walls of this small bakery, with each item, of course, baked fresh. Cheap prices and warm breads will have you coming back for sure.

Authentic culture, low prices and amazing food. A full two blocks lined with an opportunity for immersion. Take a weekend, or a weeknight, and immerse yourself into the Hispanic culture of Kansas City. You won’t be disappointed!
