Although students loved having Tu Taco as a dining option, it’s time to welcome the newest restaurant to the Student Choice Eatery. In the space where the Mexican-style restaurant once stood in Hawk’s Choice, Sushi-Do now offers a Japanese-inspired menu selected by student vote.
This dining option is unlike anything Rockhurst has had before, offering hand-crafted sushi rolls, sushi burritos, poke bowls, rice bowls, dumpling bowls and even boba tea. With ramen coming soon, the spot is quickly becoming one of the most diverse on campus. As a Hawk who enjoys trying new restaurants, I tested a few popular items with friends and gave them my honest review.
- Spicy California roll
This was the first item I ever tried from the new spot. The spiciness adds a tasty twist on the classic California roll. The crab, cucumber, and avocado were fresh, and the added spice gave it the perfect kick. Each piece held together neatly, which is always a plus for sushi on the go. You can either get premade sushi for when on the go, or customize for your perfect meal. This specific option is great for someone who may be getting into sushi for the first time. It is a reliable and tasty choice, earning a solid eight out of 10.
2. Shrimp tempura bowl
For anyone looking for something more filling, the Shrimp Tempura Bowl is the move. The crispy shrimp paired with warm rice and a sweet drizzle of sauce made the dish stand out. It’s enough to fuel you through a long class day, all though I would warn that it can get slightly messy once you dig in. Flavor wise, though, it does not disappoint. Overall, this bowl lands at a seven and a half out of 10.
3. Veggie tofu bowl
For a lighter vegetarian-friendly option, the Veggie Tofu bowl is a refreshing pick. The tofu is seasoned well, and the fresh vegetables make the dish colorful and balanced. While it doesn’t have the crunch or spice of some of the other options, it is a solid meal if you are in the mood for something on the healthier side- giving this one an eight out of 10.
4. Dumpling bowl
Last, but definitely not the least, I tried the Dumpling bowl. This bowl quickly became a favorite among my friends and me. The dumplings are soft, flavorful, and pair perfectly with rice and veggies, making it a comforting choice. It feels a little heavier than the sushi rolls, but makes it a more filling option for lunch. This one is a must try and easily earns a strong nine out of 10.
As you can tell from my reviews, Sushi-Do is bringing something completely new to Hawk’s Choice. While the Dumpling Bowl came out on top for me, all of the dishes I tried had their own highlights. Some honorable mentions include the poke bowls and boba tea, both of which are fun add-ons to any meal. And with ramen still on the way, I expect this spot to only get more popular. If you haven’t yet, I recommend grabbing your chopsticks and heading over to Sushi-Do for your next meal!
