Rockhurst University is rolling out several campus updates this fall, introducing changes to dining, vending, athletics and student programming. The initiatives include new food and beverage options, the installation of an Amazon Locker, renovations to Bourke Field, the launch of an international student companion program and the creation of a pep band set to debut in fall 2026.
Changes in Vending/Dining
Rockhurst University is updating its dining and vending options this fall, introducing several changes aimed at improving student and campus life. After a seven-year exclusive agreement with Pepsi, the university is ending the contract in favor of offering a wider variety of beverages from Pepsi, Coke and other manufacturers.
The university is also switching its vending partner from Canteen to Kansas City–based Allied Refreshment Company. Over the next several weeks, vending machines across campus will be swapped out, with the promise of more consistent stocking and better functionality.
Dining Services is making additional updates. The Starbucks Proudly Serve location in Arrupe Hall has officially closed after years of financial challenges. In its place, Allied Refreshment is installing a Micro Market, a self-service station featuring hot and cold drinks, snacks and fresh food options.
In the Rock Room, students can look forward to Sushi-Do, a new dining option serving sushi, Japanese appetizers, ramen and bento boxes. These changes are part of Rockhurst’s ongoing effort to improve the dining and vending experience on campus.
Amazon Locker Installation
Rockhurst has introduced an Amazon Locker kiosk on campus, giving students and staff a secure and convenient way to pick up or return packages 24/7. The locker is located on the east side of the Alvin Brooks Center for Faith-Justice and eliminates the need to route deliveries through the campus mail room, home or office.
To use the locker, select the Rockhurst location at checkout when placing an Amazon order. After the package arrives, Amazon will send a pickup code via email or app. Enter the code or scan it at the kiosk, and your locker door will open.
Bourke Field Project
Rockhurst Athletics has completed its yearlong campaign to refresh Bourke Field. Thanks to the generosity of alumni and families, the project raised more than $750,000 to install new turf, LED stadium lights and updated fencing. The initiative launched during the 60 Years of Men’s Soccer Celebration in fall 2024.
The project was completed largely in partnership with Tarkett Sports, a global leader in athletic facility construction. Bourke Field will continue serving as a hub for varsity competition, team practices and student recreation.
The field will officially open for competition when men’s soccer hosts Fort Hays State on Sept. 4, followed by the women’s home opener on Sept. 5.
RU International Students Program
Rockhurst has launched the RU International Student Companions Program, an initiative designed to foster connections and cultural exchange between international students and Rockhurst faculty and staff. The program pairs students with employees based on shared interests and encourages relationship-building through shared meals, cultural celebrations and gatherings during academic breaks.
Unlike housing programs, the initiative focuses on companionship and inclusive hospitality, giving international students a stronger sense of belonging within the campus community.
Applications are now open for both employees and students, with matches expected to begin in September. For more information, participants can reach out to the Office of International Student Services at [email protected].
Pep Band Debut Fall 2026
Rockhurst Athletics has announced the creation of a pep band, set to debut in fall 2026 as part of an effort to enhance the gameday atmosphere at basketball, volleyball and other athletic events.
The program will offer scholarship opportunities for current and incoming students interested in combining their passion for music with supporting Hawks athletics. Recruitment for the inaugural roster will begin during the 2025–26 academic year.
To lead the program, Rockhurst has hired John Wilson, a veteran music educator with nearly 40 years of experience directing high school and college bands. Wilson previously served as director of athletic bands at Benedictine College and held leadership roles at Southwest Baptist University and in the Raymore-Peculiar and Raytown school districts. If interested, students should contact Director of Athletics: Kristy Bayer.
Together, these initiatives reflect Rockhurst University’s broader effort to strengthen campus life by expanding services, creating new opportunities and investing in facilities. From dining halls to athletic facilities, the updates are designed to enhance the student experience and foster a more connected Rockhurst community.
