As the fall semester of college draws to a close, Rockhurst University students take a moment to reflect on the memorable experiences that have made their college years unforgettable. From casual events on campus to exciting Kansas City game days, these moments capture what makes Rockhurst truly special. In collaboration with seniors Olivia Schwarzen, Gabby Hennessy and alumna Cameron Murphy, I have compiled a list of the top 20 activities you absolutely must experience to make the most of your time before taking your final walk across the graduation stage.
1.Play an Intramural Sport
Whether basketball, volleyball or even flag football, intramurals are a great way to stay active, meet new people and show off your skills. Hennessey shared that playing an intramural sport is one thing she regrets not doing in her time at Rockhurst.
2.Eat at Go Chicken Go
Placed conveniently at the corner of campus, this Kansas City fried chicken staple is a rite of passage for Rockhurst students. I recommend getting the chicken wrap with ranch. Everyone should try Go Chicken Go at least once before graduation (this does not mean you have to go back).
3.Wednesday Night Karaoke at Gaels
If you are of age, there is no better place to have some drinks and sing your heart out than at Gaels Public House & Sports. They host a karaoke night every Wednesday starting at 8 p.m. and the bar is right across Troost in walking distance of campus.
“It is the perfect mid-week activity and a great bonding experience for all Rockhurst students,” said Schwarzen.
4.Royal’s Dollar Dog Night
Attending a Royals Dollar Dog Night is a classic Kansas City experience. Every Tuesday night game at Kauffman Stadium during the MLB season, hot dogs are just one dollar each—a perfect opportunity for some budget-friendly fun.
Grab your friends, make it a competition to see who can eat the most and soak up the atmosphere of a ballgame without breaking the bank. Just make sure to bring Tums because you might leave with stomachache!
5.Catch a Chiefs Game
With back-to-back Superbowl Championships, the Kansas City Chiefs are the pride of the city, boasting one of the loudest fan bases in the NFL. Hennessy recommends catching a game at Arrowhead for an unforgettable experience, whether you are in the stands or tailgating with friends. And if you are lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of Taylor Swift.
6.First Friday Weekend in the West Bottoms
On the first Friday-Sunday of every month, the Crossroads Arts District comes alive with a vibrant mix of art galleries, local shops, food trucks and live music. This event is a fantastic opportunity to explore Kansas City’s art scene and savor delicious local cuisine. If running is not your thing, the Plaza is still a perfect spot to grab a coffee, shop, enjoy a meal or take a leisurely walk through the beautiful surroundings.
11.Study Abroad
If you have the opportunity, studying abroad through Rockhurst is an experience you will never forget. It is a unique chance to bond with other students, immerse yourself in new culture and broaden your horizons both academically and personally.
Whether you choose to study during the summer or the school year, there are options to fit your schedule. Summer programs are perfect for students looking to explore a new culture and gain experience without taking a full semester away from campus. For those who prefer a longer stay, Rockhurst’s semester-long programs offer a deeper dive into both academics and local life.
12.City Market Farmers Market
Murphy recommends spending a weekend morning at the City Market Farmers Market. The market is bustling with vendors offering fresh produce, homemade treats, flowers and local crafts. Whether you are looking for fresh ingredients or just a leisurely outing, the City Market is a must-visit spot in Kansas City.
13.Power and Light District for the Super Bowl
If the Chiefs happen to make it to the Super Bowl again this year, head to the Power & Light District to watch the game with hundreds of other fans. It is the next best thing to being at the game itself.
“I have been the past two years and it has been some of my favorite memories at Rockhurst,” said Schwarzen.
14.Visit Loose Park
Known for its beautiful rose garden, Loose Park is the perfect spot for walking, running or simply enjoying some time in nature. Murphy recommends packing a picnic and relaxing with friends in between classes as it is just about five minutes from campus.

Kansas City Irish Fest is an annual event held at Crown Center Square during Labor Day weekend celebrating Irish culture with live music, food and activities. The festival features performances by Irish and Celtic artists, cultural exhibits, Irish dance, whiskey tastings and entertainment. This is an event you do not want to miss in Kansas City.

Make your hard work official by walking across the stage at Municipal Auditorium downtown, celebrating all your incredible accomplishments. After the ceremony, join your Rockhurst friends and family in the Hawk Walk to the Power & Light District for a lively celebration to cap off your big day.
Each of these experiences can help define your Rockhurst journey, creating memories that will last a lifetime. If you have not hit all these boxes, the good news is that there is still one more semester to go. Start checking these off your list and make the most of every moment as a Hawk.
