Musically, Kansas City is known for its rich history in jazz and blues. In the early 1900s, musicians would travel from near and far to sample the city’s iconic barbeque and attempt to get their notes on the map. But in a digital age where anyone can access and release music from just the touch of a screen, are small artists still playing live? Recently, I have been attending a lot of local band shows, and I can tell you firsthand that live music in Kansas City is still alive and well.
In attempt to uncover local music groups in Kansas City who may not get the recognition they deserve, I have decided to start a new column dedicated to doing so. The first band I want to highlight is the post-hardcore group As We Were Before. The band consists of Reed on guitar and vocals (far left), CJ on bass and vocals (middle) and Brody on drums (far right).
As We Were Before performed Feb. 24 at the Westport Bowery, a small music venue right next to the Westport Flea Market. While they were only on stage for about ten minutes, I was surprised with all they were able to do in such a short time. As they are a newer band, they just have a few songs, yet they came through with a great set that had me locked in for its entirety.
The drums were on point with infectious groves and rhythms that transitioned into brain-shaking breakdowns. The vocals switched easily from heavy screaming to softer, more melodic vibes, which was impressive. The band was also able to create memorable riffs and hooks that I was surprised to see in a local hardcore band. Another asset that stuck with me was how Reid, the guitarist and singer was constantly moving the whole show. He was able to not only sing and strum impressively, but jump around while doing it, making the show all the more entertaining.
The Bowery is relatively small, but nevertheless, the show was packed. Having everyone crowded around the stage while they were performing really added an electrifying vibe to the show for me. There was a section of the venue devoted to being a “mosh pit,” so the energy was on high the whole time.
For me, the worst part about going to a show is watching a band that looks bored preforming, and As We Were Before looked anything but bored. With their compelling spark and lively performance, it is clear that the band is passionate about the music that they make.
I definitely recommend seeing As We Were live for the best experience, but they currently have not announced any future shows yet. In the time being, I suggest listening to their song “Supercala” on Spotify to get ready.
I will be back soon with another great Kansas City group. In the meantime, remember to support local music!
