Gracias a las abuelas…

In April of 2019, Rockhurst University started an on-campus food pantry for the entire Rockhurst community.  As a part of the new food-justice initiative, this pantry was designed to assist with the financial constraints students may find themselves in during their studies. The pantry was named Grandma’s Pantry, it is located in Massman Hall between Mabbee Chapel and Einstein’s.  The name of the pantry was born from the idea that a grandma’s pantry is always full and open for anyone to help themselves.  The outcome of this pantry initiative reflects this generous spirit.

Grandma’s Pantry is a part of the Love Action Fund, a new fund established by the university to combat financial hardship on campus, coming from the sentiment: “love is shown in actions, not words.” The pantry offers canned goods, non-perishable items, bread, frozen foods, as well as feminine products.  It is remains open throughout the week, with a freely designed entrance.

Students appreciate the inclusivity this pantry provides for the campus, as students hold a wide array of economic backgrounds.  Rockhurst students have given extremely positive reviews of the new pantry.  When asked her opinion on the pantry, junior honors-student Allison Delgado replied “I like the concept of the pantry.  I think it is great, so students don’t worry about food.  Also, I like there are feminine products.  I think it is thoughtful for the women on campus.”  Similar comments were received when others were asked about this pantry, one said “It is a good program, especially since students have other concerns to think about, it is uplifting to see the university consciously making and effort to counter the food insecurity on campus.”  As a whole, this food-justice initiative reflects the university’s effort to be more inclusive socially, economically, and politically.

En abril de 2019, la Universidad de Rockhurst comenzó un almacén en el campus para toda la comunidad de Rockhurst.  El programa es una parte de la iniciativa de la justicia financiera por el campus.  Está diseñado para ayudar con las restricciones financieras que los estudiantes pueden encontrarse en durante sus estudios.  La alacena fue nombrada Grandma’s Pantry, está localizado en Massman Hall entre la capilla Mabee Chapel y el café Einstein’s.  El nombre de la alacena nació de la idea que siempre hay comida en la alacena de abuela y está abierto para que cualquiera tome cualquier cosa.  La consecuencia de la alacena refleja este espíritu generoso.

Grandma’s Pantry es una parte de la Love Action Fund, un nuevo fondo establecido por la universidad para combatir las dificultades financieras en el campus, viniendo del sentimiento: “el amor se muestra en acciones, no en palabras.”  La alacena ofrece alimentos enlatados, algunos artículos no perecederos, pan, comidas congeladas, y productos femeninos.  Permanece abierta durante la semana, con una entrada del diseño libre.

Los estudiantes aprecian la inclusividad esta alacena provee para el campus, come los estudiantes tienen una amplia gama de antecedentes económicos.  Los estudiantes de Rockhurst han dado criticas positivas de la nueva alacena.  Cuando se le preguntó sobre su opinión, estudiante de tercer año Allison Delgado respondió, “Me gusta el concepto de la alacena.  Creo que es genial, para que los estudiantes no preocupen sobre la comida.”  Comentarios parecidos fueron recibidos cuando a otros se les preguntó sobre sus opiniones, uno dijo “Es alentador ver a la universidad haciendo un esfuerzo consciente para contrarrestar la inseguridad alimentaria en el campus.”  Esta iniciativa de justicia alimentaria refleja el esfuerzo de la universidad para ser más inclusiva social, económica y políticamente.
