June 19, 2017
Story updated at approximately 7:15 p.m. Monday with number of power outages north of campus.
Severe storms ravaged their way through the Kansas City area this weekend, leaving as much as 93,000 Kansas City Power & Light customers without power at one point. The hardest hit areas were Jackson, Johnson and Clay counties.
Students living near Rockhurst’s campus were affected by the power outages, as well. Many were left without power for more than 24 hours after storms came through the area Friday and Saturday, and some are still without power.
On Sunday evening, about 20,000 customers were still without power, and Kansas City Power & Light expected “outages to continue on Monday,” according to a tweet from the company.
Shortly after 7 p.m. Monday, there remained 15 to 20 customers affected in the Troostwood neighborhood just north of Rockhurst’s campus, where many students reside during the school year and summer. According to the outage map, these customers have been without power since Friday evening.
