Sophomore Bridgette Sappington held Drury to four hits, pitching her second shutout of the season. She led Rockhurst to a 1-0 victory in the second game of the doubleheader Monday in Springfield, Mo. Drury blanked the Hawks, 3-0, in the first game.

Sappington (16-5) struck out five and walked one in pitching her 12th complete game of the season. She has won her last seven decisions. Sappington retired the first eight batter of the ball game before Drury was able to get their first hit in the third inning.

Rockhurst struck first and put the only run on the board when junior Kelsey Dean singled up the middle to drive in freshman Danielle Cross. The Hawks finished with six hits on the day.

Drury only had two opportunities in the fifth and seventh inning with runners in scoring position. Shelby Weissenbach led the Panthers going 2-3 with two singles. She led the fifth inning with base hit to left field. After a sacrifice bunt moved Weissenbach up 60 feet, Sappington was able to bear down, striking out the next batter and getting a groundout to finish the inning.

The Panthers threatened again in the bottom of the seventh inning when a single, sacrifice bunt and single put runners on first and third. Sappington struck out the next batter before getting a groundout to freshman Kelsey Tepen, the shortstop, to end the game.

In game one, the Panthers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third on three hits and one error. Both runs were unearned. Drury then added one insurance run in the sixth getting back-to-back singles with two outs.

Starter pitcher, sophomore Demi Plathe (4-5) took the loss in the complete game outing. She gave up three runs (one earned) on nine hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Jessica Kjeldgaard (8-8) took the win for Drury recording the three-hit shutout over the Hawks. She walked none while striking out six.

Freshman Madison Wagner paced the Hawks as she collected two of the Hawks’ three hits.

Rockhurst, 20-12 and 11-7 in the GLVC, will return to action squaring off with the Quincy Hawks in Quincy, Ill., on Saturday, April 11.
