PURPOSE Promotes “Exercise as Medicine”

Paige Valaika, Staff Writer

PURPOSE Club (Preparing Undergraduate Rockhurst in PT, OT, SCD, and Exercise Science) is starting the new movement “Exercise as Medicine” on Rockhurst campus. Exercise as Medicine is a message that has recently started being widely promoted by health professionals. Exercise as Medicine emphasizes movement and physical activity as key components in both the prevention and management of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart disease.

PURPOSE Club has plans to bring Exercise as Medicine to the Rockhurst campus; what’s even better is that the whole student body will be able to participate. In the month of April, PURPOSE is offering three FREE exercise classes on campus. The first will be a self-defense class which is set to take place on Thursday, April 6th at 5:30 pm in the Party Barn. The class will be taught by Jack Pereira, a Martial Arts practitioner of thirty-seven years, who’s says besides the benefits of learning a self-defense skill set, the stretching and exercise from training is a great way to get and/or stay healthy.

Other classes being offered include a Barre 3 on Friday, April 21st at 6:00 pm and Personal Training on Wednesday, April 26th at 6 pm. Both will be held in the Party Barn. Due to the space and to ensure students are able to comfortably participate PURPOSE is asking that those planning on going sign up so they are able to accommodate the numbers. If interested in any of the classes, you can sign up at the respective links listed below. PURPOSE hopes students find interest in and enjoy participating in the classes and has plans to offer more in the future.
